Meet Sandra Vanessa from El Salvador!
What has been your most memorable cultural experience so far?
My most memorable cultural experience has been seeing how Baltimore City classrooms become global learning spaces where students from diverse backgrounds learn together. This environment has reinforced my belief that education is one of the most powerful tools to promote inclusion, respect, and cross-cultural understanding.
What has been your favorite part about living in the US?
My favorite part has been the opportunity to grow professionally within a diverse educational system while representing my culture with pride. Living in the U.S. has allowed me to exchange best practices, learn innovative instructional strategies, and contribute to multicultural learning environments as an ESOL educator.
What has been the most challenging?
The most challenging part has been adapting to a new educational system with different expectations and procedures. However, this process has strengthened my adaptability, problem-solving skills, and professional growth as an international educator.
Do you have tips for your fellow J-1 teachers?
Be proactive, build strong professional relationships, and embrace your role as a cultural ambassador. Share your experiences, learn from others, and remember that your presence in the classroom has a global impact beyond academics.
What has been your student's favorite cultural exchange activity so far?
One of the most memorable cultural exchange activities for my students was sharing favorite dishes from each country. I introduced them to traditional foods from El Salvador and talked about our favorite meals, while students shared their favorite dishes from their own cultures. We also explored music from different countries. This activity allowed students to connect language learning with real-life cultural experiences, creating meaningful discussions and a fun, engaging classroom environment.
