Meet Cherrie Ann Santos from the Philippines!

‍
What has been your most memorable cultural experience so far?

‍
‍
One of my most memorable cultural experiences has been celebrating different American traditions alongside my students and colleagues while also having the opportunity to share Filipino culture with them. A particularly special moment was when I introduced Filipino food and traditions during a staff meeting. My colleagues and principal were so appreciative and even asked for the recipes, saying the dishes were some of the best they’ve tried. Moments like these, where cultures are shared and genuinely appreciated, have been incredibly meaningful. I also treasure the everyday experiences in the classroom, where cultural exchange happens naturally through conversations, activities, and shared celebrations.
‍

What has been your favorite part about living in the US?

‍
‍
My favorite part has been the professional growth and the opportunity to organize cross-cultural activities. It brings me so much joy to see my students engaged, curious, and happy while learning about different cultures. At the same time, I’ve grown so much as an educator by collaborating with dedicated colleagues who are always open to sharing ideas. The sense of belonging I’ve found here within my school and the community has truly made this experience feel like a home away from home.
‍

What has been the most challenging?

‍
‍
The most challenging part has been adjusting to a new educational system, including different expectations, classroom management styles, and teaching approaches. However, I feel very blessed because my colleagues and principal have been incredibly supportive, always ready to guide and help me. This experience has taught me the importance of being flexible and adaptable, and it has helped me grow both professionally and personally.
‍

Do you have tips for your fellow J-1 teachers?

‍
‍
One of the most important things I’ve learned is to build strong connections, not just with colleagues and your principal, but also with students, parents, and the wider community. These relationships create a supportive environment and make teaching and learning more meaningful. I also encourage fellow J-1 teachers to actively pursue professional development, embrace every opportunity, and participate in community events. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to ask for help, people are often more than willing to support you.
‍

What has been your students’ favorite cultural exchange activity so far?

‍
My students’ favorite activity has been our pen pal exchange with students in the Philippines. They were incredibly excited to write letters about their daily lives and American culture, and even more excited to receive replies from my students in the Philippines. It was heartwarming to see their curiosity about Filipino culture grow through this exchange. They also love learning about Filipino food, traditions, holidays, and history. Every time I share something from my culture, their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn make the experience even more rewarding.

Overall, this journey has been deeply meaningful to me. It has not only helped me grow as a teacher but also as a person, and I am truly grateful for the kindness, connection, and cultural understanding I’ve experienced along the way. A special shout-out to INTRAX and Troy School! I’m so grateful for the opportunity to teach here and live a dream I once only prayed for. Thank you for believing in me and making this journey possible.
