International Experience Inspires Innovative Classroom Project:
Connecting Social-Emotional Development and Writing

Petra Noelke Young

BridgeUSA J-1 Teacher | Desert Star Elementary School | Alamogordo Public Schools | New

Mexico

As a participant in the BridgeUSA J-1 Teacher Exchange Program, Petra Noelke Young brings

more than three decades of international educational experience to her fourth-grade classroom

at Desert Star Elementary School in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Throughout her career as an

elementary teacher, special education teacher, inclusion coordinator, Director of Learning

Support, and elementary school principal in Germany, Bulgaria, Romania, California, and now

New Mexico, she has remained guided by one central belief:

"If students cannot talk about it, they cannot write about it."

A defining theme throughout Petra's career has been creating inclusive learning environments

where every child has the opportunity to succeed. Following the political changes in Eastern

Europe, she helped establish inclusive educational practices in Bulgaria and Romania,

supporting schools as they expanded educational opportunities for students with diverse

learning needs. Later, in San Francisco, California, she served as Director of Learning Support,

leading programs that supported students with a wide range of academic, behavioral, and

social-emotional needs within inclusive classrooms.

These experiences strengthened her conviction that academic success begins with

relationships, emotional safety, and a deep understanding of how children learn.

Another formative chapter came in the early 2000s while teaching at Fremont High School in

South Central Los Angeles. Inspired by the work of the Freedom Writers, Petra witnessed how

giving students meaningful opportunities to tell their own stories through writing could foster

confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging. She saw that before students can become

successful writers, they need opportunities to develop language, organize their thoughts,

regulate emotions, and feel that their voices matter. Those experiences continue to shape her

teaching philosophy today.

Her graduate studies in Social-Emotional Development and Diagnostics at Justus Liebig

University in Giessen, Germany, further deepened this understanding. Under the guidance of

Professor Dr. Elisabeth von Stechow, Petra explored the relationship between emotional

development, learning, and behavior. At the same time, she taught at the Dietrich Bonhoeffer

School (Hephata) in Immenhausen, Germany, a specialized school serving students with

significant social-emotional and behavioral needs. There she gained valuable experience using

relationship-centered and therapeutic approaches that emphasized emotional regulation,

executive functioning, and the importance of play in children's cognitive and social development.

Today, these experiences come together in her fourth-grade classroom at Desert Star

Elementary School.

Recently, Petra was awarded the 2026 TeachOtero Educator Grant from the Sacramento

Mountains Foundation. In announcing the award, Executive Director John D. Wheeler wrote

that, among many worthy applications, her proposal "distinguished itself by the clarity of its

purpose and the seriousness of its design." He further described the Foundation's support as

"an investment in the future," recognizing that the curiosity, confidence, and skills teachers

cultivate today will benefit generations of students.

The grant supports an innovative classroom project that strengthens executive functioning,

self-regulation, oral language, and writing through structured, play-based learning. Petra's

project is founded on the understanding that successful writing begins long before students put

pencil to paper. Children first need opportunities to think, talk, imagine, organize ideas, and

develop the self-regulation skills that allow them to communicate effectively.

Students participate in concentration activities, movement, sequencing challenges, attention

games, guided discussions, and self-regulation exercises before planning, drafting, revising,

and reflecting on their writing. These experiences strengthen the executive functioning skills that

support success across all academic areas, including:

● Sustained attention

● Working memory

● Planning and organization

● Impulse control

● Cognitive flexibility

Among the materials funded through the grant are visual supports, strategy games, logic

activities, writing resources, timers, a wooden dollhouse, and puppets. While these materials

may appear playful, they serve an important educational purpose.

Drawing on principles commonly used in therapeutic play, guided role-play and storytelling help

children organize their thinking, sequence events, solve problems, negotiate social situations,

and express emotions in a safe and meaningful way. As students assume different roles and

create stories together, they naturally strengthen oral language, perspective-taking, planning,

and cognitive flexibility—all essential foundations for successful writing. Through this process,

play becomes an intentional bridge between social-emotional development and academic

learning.

Petra is grateful for the encouragement and support she has received from Principal David

Shriver and Assistant Principal Bill Turner, whose commitment to student well-being, teacher

development, and innovative instructional practices has created an environment where new

ideas can flourish. Their support has been instrumental in bringing this project to life at Desert

Star Elementary School.

Beyond her classroom, Petra also shares her expertise with educators throughout Alamogordo

Public Schools. She recently presented at Educate and Innovate Alamogordo, a district

professional learning initiative, where she facilitated a session on trauma-informed classrooms

and secondary traumatic stress. Her presentation emphasized how understanding stress,

emotional regulation, executive functioning, and relationship-centered teaching enables

educators to create learning environments where both students and teachers can thrive.

For Petra, writing is far more than an academic subject. It is a vehicle for helping children

develop confidence, communicate their experiences, solve problems, and discover their own

voices. By intentionally connecting literacy, executive functioning, and social-emotional

development, she hopes every student leaves her classroom believing that their ideas

matter—and that they possess the skills and confidence to express them.

Her work reflects the mission of the BridgeUSA Teacher Exchange Program by fostering the

exchange of educational knowledge across cultures while continually learning from American

schools and communities. Bringing together decades of international experience with innovative

educational practices, Petra continues to enrich both her classroom and the broader educational

community.
